This has reached new levels of bad writing

I'm specifically talking about the events of episode 7.

Maki's fears about love, resulting from his father leaving and his parent's divorcing, is the main reason that he's hesitant to confess and move forward with his relationship with Umi, right?

So sure enough, when Maki is seemingly finally going to take that step, his father miraculously happens to be in the exact same spot in the city at the exact moment he's about to confess. And immediately before he can say the words to Umi, a woman calls out to his father, who just happens to be standing so close to Maki that he can hear it over the dozens of people surrounding him in the busy city square. And of course this causes the most egregious use of the interrupted confession cliche that I've ever seen.

Could they really not have come up with ANY other reason to not have him confess yet that wasn't so unbelievably lazy and impossibly coincidental? A meteor hitting Umi on the head would have been better than this.
