Hi neighbors, I’m in the Capitol Hill neighborhood and trying to figure out a practical, trip‑safe way to charge an EV from a townhouse with on‑street parking. I have seen some folks get pretty creative with laying the cable across the sidewalk, but haven't had the opportunity to talk to them about it.
I’m planning to install a 110V outdoor outlet on the front of our rowhouse, but the distance from the outlet to the car (parked across the street) is ~30 ft to the charge port. Most Level 1 chargers seem to max out at 25 ft, and I’d really like to avoid extension cords.
DC has guidance about running charging cables across sidewalks in a way that avoids trip hazards, but I haven’t been able to find a mat, cable ramp, or cover that clearly meets the requirements.
For folks who are already doing this:
- How are you routing the cable across the sidewalk safely and legally?
- Are there specific EVSEs with longer cables you recommend?
- Any trip‑safe mats, ramps, or covers you’ve used successfully (brand/model links appreciated)?
- Any lessons learned dealing with DDOT, neighbors, or enforcement?
Would really appreciate seeing what’s actually working on Capitol Hill or elsewhere in DC. Thanks! 🚗⚡️
