I'm currently studying medicine at New Anglia University, and honestly one of the biggest surprises for me wasn't just the course itself - it was the whole experience of studying on an island.

Before coming here, I thought it might feel isolating or even a bit boring, but it's been kind of the opposite. The environment is actually really calm and focused, which makes a big difference when You're dealing with such a demanding degree. There are fewer distractions compared to big cities, so you naturally get into a routine, that allows you to priortise your studies.

At the same time, it doesnt feel cut off. You end up forming a pretty close-knit group with other students because everyone's kind of in the same situation - studying hard whilst living nearby, and going through the same challenges. We spend time together outside of uni as well, at Shoal Bay beach or just sitting in a cafe. I have also created a routine for myself that involves going to the gym as much as I can.

Academically, I was also surprised by how early you’re encouraged to think clinically rather than just memorise content. It’s not just “learn this and repeat it,” but more about understanding and applying things, which can be challenging but also makes it more interesting.

Overall, I think the combination of the environment & the way medicine is taught here is what caught me off guard the most. It’s a lot more immersive than I expected.

Im curious to hear from other med students - what surprised you about where or how you studied medicine?
