Americans in Foreign Hospitals
This was defaultism that had a happy ending for all involved and the American wasn’t snobbish about it.
I work in the medical field, some time ago we had a plane emergency land because a young woman went into labour. Guyana was not their planned destination and she was only about 6 months along.
She was transported to the hospital, had an emergency c-section, baby stayed in NICU until it was safe to discharge. The panic that had eased after the safe delivery and survival of the baby was revitalised when it was “time to pay.”
The mother started crying because she said she didn’t have “travel health insurance” and she had no idea if we accepted her American insurance or credit cards.
I had the privilege of telling her that it was literally free. I’ve never seen anyone so excited to hear that.
