Imaginators Creation 13: Life Swashbuckler

I’ve been trying to work in the Night Owl torso to one of my creations for a long time, but I’ve always struggled to do so because the material just doesn’t match any other parts in the game. I’m proud of this design because I came up with the idea to treat the scales as a part of a character’s body, rather than as part of a piece of clothing.

This made an interesting dynamic where a shirtless character has heavy armor around his neck and shoulders. Something about that made me imagine a fantasy Aztec warrior, so I tried to lean into that by naming the character “Az” and incorporating other vaguely tribal design elements.

Overall, I’m very happy with how this Imaginator turned out; so much so that I was also considering making a variant with golden armor, but I ran out of time because I’m moving and my roommate owns the Wii. I’ll still be posting some more characters from my backlog, but this will be the last Skylander I create for a long while.

For this character, I started by picking out the sword and then choosing the color scheme based on that. It really streamlined the process, but it can also limit my options. I really like how his upper body turned out. I think the dragon chest plate matches his shoulder guards really well, and the metal wings sprouting out of his back almost make it look like the armor’s magical.

To follow Skylanders tradition, I also made an alt dark variant. I really like how ominous the dark greys and purples look. I decided to do it for this guy because he has a lot of intricate details, so I felt like I could get a lot of mileage out of a different color scheme.

At the same time, all of his intricacies make me wonder how well he could pass for a real figurine. I think a lot of the real Skylanders have relatively simple designs. What do you think?

This is a character I’m really proud of because I think I did a good job mixing colors. I like his mix of dark red and orange clothes and yellow accents. I usually dislike the color orange, but I think I was able to make it work here by pairing it with other warm colors especially his fur, which I made a warm brown.

I also really like his head design: I think all the horns and tusks, combined with his yellow and orange eyes, give him an almost devilish feel. He wears a suit of armor so hot that it glows from within, and he fights with the chain that used to hold his shackles (arm guards) together. I think these elements give him a really tough aesthetic.

Since this guy’s meant to be a warthog, I tried to make him very top heavy since pigs are known to attack by charging at people. He looks really goofy when standing up straight (see picture 4 😅) but I think it suits the brawler’s typical hunched-forward posture by making him look like he’s ready to run you down and mess you up.
