Saw this sometime ago, it stuck with me.
At the bare minimum, we need to not one-dimensional-ize each other as "religious," "controlling," "non-cosmopolitan," etc. based on appearance.
The turban to us is a cultural artefact with an acquired history, just like the suit is to a christian, a saree is to a Hindu lady.
It's NOT A DECLARATION THAT WE'RE PERFECT.
That's an unfair pedestal we never asked for.
Most of us are philosophical, not "religious" and have full identities outside of being singhs which we've worked really hard on that just get flattened into "paaji."
The inner work and improvement we need to do is the very purpose of our lives and that's what your ENTIRE life is for.
We never said we become "PERFECT PEOPLE" by just wearing a turban. Sure, it's a responsibility too. But without it, who decides our "default" of what's socially acceptable? The West? The state?
