Custom China Gravel Build – 8.5 kg / ~€2,200 total (Airwolf YF-R003 + EliteWheels + GRX RX820)
After lurking on r/ChineseCarbon and watching way too much ChinaCycling on YouTube, I finally took the plunge and built up my own gravel bike from scratch. Goal: lightweight carbon gravel without the €4,000+ price tag. Result: 8.5 kg complete (with pedals and cages), ~€2,200 total.
Quick context: I’m based in Germany and ordered everything to Germany — so all prices and shipping/customs notes below reflect a German/EU buyer’s perspective.
You can find a detailed blog post about building a gravel bike here: https://neumannmarcel.de/custom-china-gravel-build-the-best-bang-for-the-buck-85kg-2200e/
Frame: Airwolf YF-R003
T1000 carbon, UDH, T47 threaded BB, flat mount, internal routing, downtube storage, 700x50C clearance, 27.2 seatpost. Frame set ships with fork, headset, integrated carbon cockpit (HB009) and seatpost. I went with a custom glossy orange.
Shipping was ~4 weeks total to Germany (2 weeks paint + 2 weeks shipping). Honestly the most surprising part was the service: the seller (Yaoflying) reached out on WhatsApp to confirm cockpit dimensions, paint details, and even sent photos of the finished frame before shipping. Quality is genuinely good. BB threads, flat mount faces. all dimensionally spot on, zero rework needed.
Build sheet:
• Frame + fork + integrated cockpit (Airwolf YF-R003 + HB009): ~€450 + ~€100 shipping/VAT
• Wheels — EliteWheels SLR Gravel 45mm (Centerlock, Shimano HG freehub): ~€450
• Groupset — Shimano GRX RX820 1x12 (42T chainring, 10-51T cassette): ~€800
• Tires — Specialized Pathfinder TLR 700x45C: ~€90
• Tubeless setup — Peaty’s valves + sealant: ~€30
• Bottom bracket — ACROS T47 Hollowtech II: ~€70
• Rotors — Shimano RT-CL800 160mm (Centerlock): ~€80
• Pedals — Kinan carbon/Ti: ~€40
• Saddle — RYET 3D-printed (~141 g): ~€30
• Bar tape, cables, spacers, small parts: ~€40
• Total: ~€2,180
Notes from the build:
• EliteWheels ship from a Spain warehouse, no extra customs, 7 working days to Germany.
• AliExpress orders to Germany: VAT is collected at checkout, but factor in possible customs handling on higher-value parcels (frame was the only one where it mattered).
• Internal routing through the integrated cockpit was the biggest patience test. A proper cable routing tool from AliExpress was worth every cent.
• Foam cable sleeves inside the frame stop the rattle, cheap and effective.
• Tools I needed: torque wrench, carbon paste, ACROS T47 tool, Shimano bleed kit, cable cutter, internal routing tool.
• Went GRX over a Chinese groupset on purpose — could’ve saved another €200–300 but didn’t want a wildcard on the drivetrain. Bought it from a German shop (bike-components.de) for proper warranty handling.
Verdict after the first 300 km: would do it again. Long-term frame durability is the open question, i’ll report back. If you’ve got the time, the tools, and the patience to track 10 different shipments across China, Spain and Germany, the value here is honestly hard to beat.
Happy to answer questions on specific parts, sourcing to Germany/EU, or the build itself.
