Is controller passing a fine way to play Jrpg?

I mention this before and seems like people who play Jrpgs really only see it as a solo game so when I mention i play with my bro and split the characters they think it's odd, tedious and ruins the game as it limits the choices I have in a game.

But I play that way with my bro 2 or more characters in a turned based sorta segment I chose the ones I like the most he chooses the ones he likes the most and we just strategies what we chose and work together to beat the bad guys of said game.

Just bought Final Fantasy 8 it's shipping for the ps1 my very first Final fantasy .

So I have a tiny experience of final fantasy x not one to care about getting personal but my extremely abusive father played it with me the game was amazing and was one of the few good moments I guess when I was younger living with him. However, I myself hardly played it just watched and I was way to young.

I got X again for me and my twin to have new memories of such a good game but we played like 5% before we sold our ps2

But this time years later we have a ps1 ans we are ready to truly play through are first final fantasy game. With no spoilers what should I know

Also is their multiple characters me and my bro can spit the characters in battle.? Or no
