Detailed Experience: Baby Born in India → UK Passport → FRRO Visa (X-1) – Full Journey & Lessons
Hi all,
Sharing my full experience as this situation is quite confusing and stressful for many parents. Hopefully this helps someone.
👶 Background
- Baby born in India
- Initially applied for Indian passport
- Later obtained UK passport
At this point, baby effectively became a foreign citizen (UK), and Indian passport needed to be surrendered + immigration status regularised.
⚠️ The Confusion
Big questions I had:
- Can baby travel with both passports? ❌
- Can we exit India directly? ❌
- Do we need exit permit? 🤔
- Will there be penalty? 😟
After research + guidance, realised:
👉 Baby becomes a foreign national after UK passport
👉 Needs proper immigration status in India
🧾 Step 1: Passport Surrender (Preparation)
Prepared documents for surrender:
- Indian passport
- UK passport copy
- Birth certificate
- Parent passports
- NOC + authorization (father abroad case)
- Explanation letter
(Father was in UK, so provided notarised documents)
🌐 Step 2: FRRO Application
Applied via FRRO portal:
FRRO
Initial application:
- Birth registration of foreign child
- Exit permit request
📩 Step 3: FRRO (Bengaluru) Asked for More Docs
FRRO Bengaluru requested:
- Request letter for new visa (signed by both parents)
- Financial undertaking letter
- Passport copies (child + parents)
- Birth certificate
- Address proof
This is a good sign — means they are processing your case.
📄 Step 4: Submitted Documents
Uploaded a clean file with:
- Request letter (joint parents)
- Financial undertaking
- UK passport copy
- Birth certificate
- Parent documents
- Supporting proofs (father employment, etc.)
🎯 Step 5: Final Outcome
Instead of exit permit, FRRO issued:
👉 Entry X-1 Visa (Multiple Entry, 1 Year Validity)
👉 Fee paid: ₹14,600
✅ What this means
- Baby now has legal immigration status in India
- Can exit India and re-enter during visa validity
- No major penalty imposed in our case
✈️ Travel Situation
Now baby can travel using:
- UK passport
- X-1 visa
No need to worry about exit permit anymore.
💡 Important Learnings
- Do NOT travel with both passports
- Always regularise via FRRO — don’t ignore
- Honest explanation works
- Joint parent documentation is critical
- Financial undertaking improves approval chances
- In many baby cases, FRRO gives visa instead of exit permit
💰 About Fees
₹14,600 paid — this is normal for:
- Visa issuance
- Status regularisation
- Processing charges
🧠 Key Insight
FRRO is not trying to penalise genuine baby cases.
If you:
- Apply properly
- Provide documents
- Explain clearly
👉 They usually resolve the case positively
🙌 Final Advice
If your baby:
- Born in India
- Got foreign passport (UK, etc.)
- No visa / unclear status
👉 Don’t panic
👉 Apply via FRRO
👉 Follow instructions
You will likely get a proper resolution.
