Hi all, I've got a 2012 Ford Fusion SEL with 316xxx km on it. (just under 200,000 miles). I recently filed a claim with our provincial insurance (Manitoba), for a steering issue I've been having. I drove through a puddle, and drove 30 minutes on the highway after, and it worked fine with no issues. It dropped below freezing overnight, and I woke up and my steering wheel was locked. It would start, I could drive forwards and backwards, but no matter what, I couldn't force the wheel. I got a ride into work that morning, and when I came home, the steering was fine again. I used it the entirety of the afternoon, went to bed, drove it to work the next morning, and after work it was locked again. After some wiggling, it became unstuck, and I drove it home, and that's when I filed the claim. It was towed and assessed.
I was evaluated to not have water damage and was moved to an impound. I got a letter today that I have to pick up the vehicle from the impound. I phoned after it a bit and was told "There's only so much we can look at." I worry about picking it up, it being fine, and the steering locking up while driving. I worry that MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) may have missed something.
Does this issue at all sound familiar to what you've experienced before? Is it as drastic as a steering rack replacement? If that's the case, it's going to be taken to a scrap yard, or listed on FB marketplace for scrap price.
