Hello group,
I need some help here as I have been asked to apply for a promotion and am considering it.
Stats: Energy Industry (very stable)
- Been with the company and current role for 2 years.
- Current Comp: $138k +10% bonus + pension
- Total Household income $220k in medium COL area.
- Current Role: Highest level IC
- 40 hr weeks, not a lot of work stress outside of corporate nonsense.
New Role:
- Manager of long-standing (decades) team. Team is currently 15 people, will be split into two regions and teams of 7 & 8. I like and respect the current manager who I will split the team with.
- New Comp: Pay range of $135k-$200k (I would likely land somewhere in the $160k range)+ 15% bonus + pension
- Estimated 45-50 hr weeks, on call during adverse weather. Hard to know how much extra stress due to current manager handling much larger team.
Considerations:
- This role is not guaranteed, I have to interview for it and go through all the hoops.
- With the pension, I don't ever plan on leaving this company if possible. Ideally this role would open up in 4-5 years when I am "ready" but the timing isn't up to me.
- If I turn down the promotion, I might be tanking my internal reputation.
- I have a 6 month old and 3 year old at home. Wife works but is off (unpaid, yay USA) until the fall. 2 in daycare starting in the fall, will be expensive but we can handle it.
- Our bills are paid, we are saving adequately for retirement, and we are not financially stressed even if month to month $ is tight
Deep down I don't really think I want this, but I feel confident in my ability to do it and the company has been having a very hard time filling the role (multiple re-postings of position) due to a very unique skill set.
Appreciate all of your thoughts on the trade off between time and $, especially in these precious early years.
