Hi everyone,

I’m looking at buying a 2003 MINI Cooper R50 manual in New Zealand.

Details:

- 2003 MINI Cooper R50

- 1.6L petrol

- 5-speed manual

- Around 130,000 km

- WOF valid until 05/2026

- Rego until 01/2026

- Asking price: NZ$1,500

The CarJam history shows it has failed WOF several times in the past, but it recently passed WOF. I’m going to inspect and test drive it before paying the remaining balance.

What are the main things I should check on an R50 manual before buying?

I’m especially worried about:

- clutch

- gearbox

- oil leaks

- coolant leaks / overheating

- suspension

- electrical issues

Would you consider this a reasonable cheap first car, or is it too risky?

Thanks!
