HMO vs. Medical Insurance: What’s actually sustainable for self-employed people in 2026?

I’m trying to finalize my health coverage and I’m torn. I’ve noticed that while HMOs are convenient, their limits (usually ₱150k-₱200k) feel like "loose change" during a major surgery.

I'm looking into Pacific Cross because of the ₱5M limit and the fact that they’ve been more stable with their 2026 rates compared to others. But for those who have actually filed claims:

  • How’s the LOA/reimbursement process?
  • Is the "Guaranteed Renewability" until age 100 actually a factor in your decision?
  • Any "hidden" pros/cons I should know before committing?

Adulting realization: one hospital emergency can literally wipe out savings

I’m in my late 20s and lately mas nagiging conscious ako sa emergency funds + health coverage after seeing how expensive even “minor” procedures are now.

Curious lang:
For freelancers/self-employed people here, what health insurance or medical coverage worked for you?

Ang hirap kasi pag walang company HMO. I’ve been checking different options including Pacific Cross, Maxicare, etc. but wanted honest feedback from actual users sana before committing.

Would love to hear pros/cons.
