Does this bother you?
A common thing I've found is that people seem to talk about wheelchairs as if they're cars or vehicles. I hear a lot of 'drive that way' and 'park over there' and 'beep beep wheelchair coming through' and it really bothers me.
I view my (manual) wheelchair as a part of me. I've never stopped using terms like 'going for a walk' or 'run away' because they don't bother me. Pushing myself in my wheelchair IS how I walk/run, it's my legs rather than a vehicle that gets me from A to B. Mostly I just hate people talking about driving in reference to my wheelchair. I feel like it's because people are weird about disability aids and therefore try to use other words to describe them to make themselves feel better?
I often correct people over this but recently I've stopped to wonder if I'm being overly sensitive? And if other wheelchair users actually don't mind/it's just a me thing? What's everyone's thoughts?
