Elizabeth Skiffen? Native American or not.
Hi guys, so I was just doing genealogy research on my mom & her dad’s side— and came across an ancestor named Elizabeth Skiffen, she supposedly was born in 1642 in Virginia (?? Or England ??) & died Jan 1 1694 in Virginia. I was shocked because on her profile, somebody listed her as Native American, specifically Powhatan. Her father seems to for sure be James William Skiffen who was born 1620 in West Yorkshire England. He died 1665 in Virginia & came to Virginia around 1650. I have been searching and searching & for the life of me cannot find Elizabeth’s birth record source to know where she was born, OR who her mother was for sure.
Somebody has her mother listed as a woman named Sarah Elizabeth Powhatan (supposedly the daughter of Cleopatra Powhatan (Matoaka’s sister)
I know there is so so *so* many made up & fabrications about the Powhatan tribe, specifically relating to Matoaka (“Pocahontas”) I did not know this before researching my supposed ancestor Elizabeth, but oh my god you guys my brain is a MESS because of this. I have NO idea what to believe here.
Some sites have Elizabeth Skiffen listed as born in England, which I could see being true.
I know FindAGrave is not a real source, unless sources are cited & reliable. On it there is this whole story supposedly about her and I’m wondering if it’s a complete fabrication, or where this story even comes from. I will link the FindAGrave, and the familysearch profile.
If anybody could give me some insight, I’d be so happy lol. The discourse I see online does not help my confusion whatsoever.
