Extremely fine virgin hair + hard water + constant mid-length breakage despite being VERY careful with it — has anyone actually fixed this?
Disclaimer: I know this is a long post. I’m only writing this much because I’ve already tried a lot of the common “fine hair” advice/products that seem to work for other people, but with my very specific combination of issues nothing has really made a lasting difference.
I honestly don’t know what I’m doing wrong anymore and I’d really appreciate advice from people with similar hair.
My hair is:
• virgin (never bleached/dyed)
• extremely fine
• waist/butt length
• very prone to breakage through the mid-lengths
• dry, static-y/frizzy, lots of little broken hairs sticking up
• splits very easily
• exposed to extremely hard water
I’m already VERY careful with it:
• I use a chelating shampoo regularly for hard water buildup
• I don’t use straighteners/curling irons
• only blow dry
• I sleep in a satin bonnet
• protective hairstyle at night
• no tight elastics
• I baby this hair constantly 😭
And yet it still looks damaged and keeps snapping.
I even trimmed about 5 cm a month ago, and for maybe 2–3 weeks my lengths finally felt soft and healthy again, but now the next few centimeters already feel rough/dry again and like the ends are starting to split all over.
One thing I also struggle with is understanding which products are actually hydrating/moisturizing vs protein-heavy. A lot of “repair” products seem to secretly contain protein and I’m wondering if my fine hair maybe hates too much protein?
For people with:
• very fine fragile hair
• hard water
• chronic breakage/flyaways
• dry lengths but easily overloaded hair
What routine/products genuinely helped?
At this point price honestly doesn’t matter if something truly works. I just want healthy-looking hair that stops breaking halfway up the strands.
