Traditional PLC vs more software-defined approach what’s actually better?

Trying to understand where people stand on this.

On one side:

Traditional PLC setups → stable, predictable, proven

On the other:

More software-defined automation ideas → modular, flexible, easier scaling (in theory)

But in real-world environments:

Which one actually works better long term?

Is the flexibility worth the added complexity?
