Whasapp hack
I see a lot of fear and paranoia regarding the recent news with whatsapp hacking, essentially people are reporting that they are getting hacked by picking up a phone call only and that its very advanced, which i thought was unlikely for scammers to have zero click exploits so i looked into it and this is most likely in my opinion how it works:
myT essentially has this setting for voicemails and accessing your voicemails, i heard some rumours about emtel so i do not know it may be that they have this too
- The scammer calls you while trying to Reregister your phone number on whatsapp
- They send a SMS message ( as seen as they did to that lawyer toorabally) while on call
- When the SMS fail they can request a call through whatsapp for the code and since you are on a call with them, whatsapp's call forward to voicemail
- They access your voicemail remotely ( there's supposed to be some sort of pin for this but i think it may be default or easy, im not sure)
- Once they acess your voicemails, it's over your account is gone.
note: This is assuming victims are not lying and didn't actually give out their OTP.
Take care of you and your family check if they have voicemail on
I can't think of any other way how this could happen, if any one has any other ideas feel free to share.
