Hey all, I have had a pilonidal cyst for approximately 2 years now I’d say but it was always just a skin colored lump in my tailbone.

Backstory:

When it was dormant-ish I just adjusted my seating habits to not put pressure on it and made lifestyle changes to not aggravate it. However, about a couple weeks ago it formed an abscess (I believe is the right term?). It formed a pimple looking thing on my tailbone area that formed a head and eventually drained for the first time ever and I was so scared, especially because my first ever drainage was at my workplace…

I got out of work early to go to my PCP who prescribed me antibiotics for the infection and said antibiotics wouldn’t make it go away though and to contact urgent care for a potential I&D and maybe surgery in the long run.

Because I have a new job I don’t have much time accrued to recover from a long open wound surgery, so I figure that an I&D would be the likely solution. After finishing my antibiotics course (1 week), there was still something back there but it looked better than it started so I just tried to ignore it again but fast forward to now and it started draining at work again randomly, this time I already had gauze at least.

Question:

So my question is were you able to get an I&D and go to work the next day comfortably (sitting)?? I am trying to not take much time off of work in case of extraneous events.

Also, my friend who’s had a pilonidal cyst before said that when he got an I&D it was only temporary relief for like a week or so. Is getting an I&D even worth it if it’ll come back so soon, is there a better way that doesn’t have such a long recovery period? After an I&D, what happens to the cyst/abscess and how do you know if it has temporarily disappeared or not? Thank you in advance for at least looking at this post and maybe answering I’m just anxious and hate this thing in my butt🙏
