Hi there, im a first year Political Science student at the University of Amsterdam and I have a question about prerequisite timing / possible study delay.
Here’s my situation:
- Research Methods has a prerequisite: passing IPRES.
- If I don’t pass IPRES in my 1st year, I would need to retake it in year 2.
- That would mean I could only take Research Methods in semester 1 of year 3.
My concern is about third-year semester-2 courses like the BA Thesis Project and Research Project, since they list Research Methods as a prerequisite.
The timeline is sorta like this:
- registration for semester-2 courses is between Nov 30 – Dec 8,
- Research Methods would finish around Dec 16,
- BA Thesis Project starts in February
So technically I would complete Research Methods before those courses actually begin, but after the registration window closes.
Has anyone at UvA experienced something similar?
Do they allow conditional/manual enrollment in situations like this, or could this realistically force a fourth year even if everything else is on track?
For context: I’ve passed my other courses so far and this would basically be the only bottleneck in my study planning.
