Bread is the most overrated food. I’ve always thought bread gets way more credit than it deserves. It’s everywhere, people talk about it like it’s essential, but on its own it’s kind of… nothing. It’s just a base. You don’t crave plain bread, it's carried by what you pair it with: butter, jam, sandwich fillings, whatever. The bread is just there so you’re not eating those things with your hands.
And sure, fresh bread smells great, but so does a lot of food that actually has flavor. Once you get past that smell, most bread is either dry, too chewy, or just bland. Even the “good” kinds are basically about texture more than taste.
It also takes up space in meals without adding much. You eat a couple slices and suddenly you’re full, but it’s not like you had something interesting. It’s just filler. If anything, it kind of holds back the stuff you actually want to taste.
It’s not that bread is bad—it’s fine. It just somehow ended up with this reputation like it’s the greatest staple of all time, it provided for civilizations etc, when really it’s more like a background extra that people decided to hype up way too much. Especially the French.
