My wife is currently 6 weeks pregnant, and over the past two weeks she has become increasingly unwell. She has mostly been confined to bed due to persistent nausea, weakness, and fatigue. Although she has attempted to go to work, she often has to return home early because she feels too unwell to continue.
She has been prescribed medications such as Metoclopramide and Cyclizine, but she is reluctant to take them because they cause significant drowsiness. Her oral intake has been minimal, as she struggles with both eating and drinking throughout the day.
I gently encourage her to eat, drink, and mobilise, but even walking short distances around the house is difficult for her. Sometimes she is able to walk briefly with support, such as holding onto me, but this is only for a short period.
She is also experiencing anxiety, particularly about starting a new job in the coming week. She worries about how she will manage work when she is struggling even with basic mobility at home. Additionally, she has a strong fear of vomiting, which adds to her distress.
We have been in contact with her doctor and midwife, and while we have been reassured that her symptoms are common in early pregnancy, the severity and impact on her daily functioning have been challenging for both of us.
I am doing my best to support her physically and emotionally, but I am concerned about her wellbeing and unsure how best to help her through this.
