I was trying to get a clearer picture of the OpenClaw ecosystem, for understanding the difference between self hosted setups and managed options. Thought it would be simple but the deeper I went, the more complex it started to feel. Different tools solve similar problems in completely different ways so comparing them was not as simple as I expected.
A few patterns started to stand out:
- Some setups are super easy to start, others assume you’ll handle infra yourself.
- Pricing is kind of all over the place depending on what’s included.
- Big difference between rigid workflows vs more flexible agent style setups.
- A few newer options are mixing both instead of forcing one approach.
- Ongoing maintenance (updates, scaling, etc.) seems like a bigger factor than I initially thought.
What surprised me most was how much ongoing maintenance matters. It’s easy to focus on setup but long term upkeep, updates and scaling seem to be where most of the real cost and effort sits.
After going through a bunch of these, I tried to organize everything in one place just to make sense of it for myself. Sharing it here in case it helps someone else exploring the same space: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tVqYh8fAWLAFAuuM3-G0WVoFqY6VKJ8pgFdS3zvux80/edit?gid=2137144791#gid=2137144791
Might be missing some so would like to know what others here ended up choosing.
