Hello, my bf recently "totaled" his accord when he lost traction in the rain and smashed into a curb screwing up his front driver side suspension assembly. In order to not have such a sentimental (and expensive) asset be lost I have tackled replacing what I can. I currently have all the parts on order but only one that I haven't, the steering rack and pinon (honda oem #53601T2GA81). I'm trying to decide if it would be best to buy a remanufactured unit for around $700-800 or to buy Honda OEM $1.5-3k (the higher is what they quoted). I looked through alldata and everything including dropping the front subframe isn't an issue to me, however in both the reman and rock auto's descriptions of the part they mention a possible need to reprogram the electric power steering system. I don't know if this is necessarily the right sub to ask but would reprograming it through something like hondata be possible? I have experience in hptuners for GM and Ford vehicles as that is what I do for work, but don't know if Honda has their own OE bs that has to be flashed to it. If that isn't possible would it then be possible to just replace the rack and have it towed to be reprogramed? Is there any illusive store online that sells them pre-programmed to the VIN? Or as a last ditch effort can I just risk it and hope the quote is just adding that on as a precaution and replace the tie-rod end like I was going to already and inspect it from there as to whether it is bent and if I can bend it back. Any info would be appreciated, thank you!
