Bubastis (Tell Basta)

Today, we visited the ancient city of Bubasta, modern Tell Basta. A predynastic site with remains of Old, Middle and New Kingdom monuments. Dedicated to the cat goddess Bastet, it was the capital of the 22nd Dynasty.

We were lucky enough to be invited for coffee with the curator and found out lots more interesting info.

An important site for Christianity too, it is believed that the statues within the temple of the goddess Bastet collapsed upon Jesus’ arrival, aligning with the biblical prophecy of Isaiah 19:1: “Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence”.
