What do you guys think of these deductions from my landlord. I have already asked the landlord for all the receipts and evidence that it was tenant damage and I received a reply that we're just trying to find loopholes for our poor decisions.
The closet door we did accidently put a hole in but I don't know if $200 is a fair price. It is a hollow bifold type door.
The lamp post was leaning after a really strong wind storm at one point so we leaned it back up and put the rocks back around the base. I guess the landlord had saw it leaning and didn't say anything to us for 4 months while we were still living there. I added an image of the lamp when we moved out.
Carpet cleaning is complicated because the lease language says, "the carpets need to be cleaned and a receipt provided, as follows:" and the instructions are left blank. I interpreted this as not needing anything more than vacuuming. The landlord emailed me the lease line after the final walkthrough where we gave him back the keys and I asked if renting a carpet cleaner and giving him that receipt was acceptable. He ignored me and sent us a 24 hour notice to clean the carpets and shower door. I declined because we already return the house to him and I didn't want blame for anything else. I added an image of the lease language as I did find it confusing personally.
Water softener wasn't in the lease to maintain as a tenant. Landlord thinks it's my responsibility because the lease says we were responsible, "To periodically inspect the premises and immediately notify Manager of necessary repairs." No where in the lease does it give us the responsibility for adding salt to the water softener.
The shower door was clean with some amount of hard water stains. This was a bit better then the condition we received the house in. I didn't take a move in picture because our area is known for having hard water and every place I've ever lived has had worse than that. This seems like normal wear and tear to me. I added a couple of pictures of the shower door at move out.
Should I fight any of this or should I just let it go and move on?
