I stopped to take pictures of the lupine along the Yuba River today and, as soon as I knelt down, saw this guy under the rock about 6 feet away. He never rattled, just watched me until I stood up, then slowly retreated under the rock and showed me his 5 buttons.

While at a lamb marking way out in the middle of nowhere this weekend I started seeing obsidian chunks where the sheep had kicked up the dirt along a bluff above a wash. The local ranchers told me they wouldn’t expect obsidian there so I dug around the dirt and found quite a few chunks. Do these look like they were worked by human hands? The solo piece of obsidian is tiny, about one inch long.
