Recently, I was flying from Sydney, Australia to LAX as an AA Executive Platinum. I paid for a business class seat, and I chose row 3 in the "mini cabin" (IFKYK). I was in line to board the flight, and the gate agent said they had to reprint my boarding pass because I started my itinerary in New Zealand and it was from Qantas. They handed me my boarding pass and I went on my way.
As I waited in line on the jet bridge, I noticed my boarding pass now said 1J - in the first class cabin. I did not think I was eligible to be upgraded from business to first, but I was top status and didn't have anyone to ask.
So I get on the plane and head to 1J, the first row of first class in the tiny first cabin. Everyone else is already seated there. I put my bag above, plug in my devices, start putting the bedding together, etc.
A guy comes up to me and tells me he is also assigned 1J and shows me his boarding pass. We compare boarding passes and he says he will go talk to the flight attendant in first. He was nice about it, and I just continued getting comfortable while I waited to hear.
The flight attendant comes over and says there was a mistake, and I need to move to 8H now - still in business class but not in the mini cabin. I check the app and I was moved there now.
So I have to pack up my belongings and move, doing the walk of shame out of first and back to business. It was embarrassing because it appeared to everyone else in the cabin that I was trying to get a seat I wasn't entitled to. I never even asked for it! A few people in the first class cabin looked at me like I was scum of the Earth.
I also lost my chosen seat in row 3, which I had picked several months before.
My seat in row 8 was nice for the very long flight, but the entire thing was awful and had me frazzled. Rant over, but I wanted to share somewhere.
