A major fire at the Viva Energy refinery in Geelong has been extinguished after multiple explosions triggered a large-scale emergency response late Tuesday night.
Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed the incident began around 11:15pm, with flames reaching up to 60 metres high at its peak. Around 50 workers were on site at the time, with no injuries reported.
The fire originated in the refinery’s MoGas processing unit — an area handling highly flammable liquid fuels and gases — and was intensified by a significant hydrocarbon leak. Authorities described the blaze as ‘ferocious’, escalating rapidly from a smaller ignition into a high-risk industrial fire.
The incident was contained to the originating unit and brought under control by Thursday, with investigations now underway.
The Geelong refinery is one of only two operating refineries in Australia — highlighting how critical, and how vulnerable, this infrastructure remains.
What’s something that caught you off guard when you first got into FIFO? Good or bad.
