Support letters are important to an EB-1A petition! However, they are strongest when supported by objective evidence. If a letter says the client made "original contributions of major significance," that statement alone is not enough. Documentation is necessary to substantiate the letter. Think beyond the wording of the letter: do you have citations, implementation records, media coverage, adoption data, patents, contracts, metrics, or other third-party documentation?

TLDR - Support letters should reinforce the evidence, not carry the case by themselves.

If you're thinking about EB1A, starting your prep earlier helps set you up for stronger expert letters. You're probably networking for your career anyways, but if you're even considering EB-1A, it'll be helpful to keep the following guidelines in mind:

- Go to conferences, attend industry panels, join professional association consistently, so people recognize and know you
- When introducing experts to your work, share your research or product, collaborate where possible, and provide value first.
- Don't meet someone and immediately ask for a recommendation letter. Independent expert letters carry weight because they are credible and objective, and that credibility is much stronger when the relationship is authentic and built over time

A lot of people treat the field definition like a quick intro and move on. But this is actually one of the most important parts of your petition. It's the lens the officer uses to read every single piece of evidence you submit.

So if your field description shifts between your narrative, your criteria arguments, and your reference letters, that inconsistency quietly chips away at your whole case. Even if each piece is strong on its own, the mixed signals add up.

Get really clear on how you're defining your field. Then go back through every exhibit and ask yourself: Does this still make sense through that lens? Everything the officer sees will be filtered through it, so it's worth the extra pass.
