Reading through the posts in the comments about the ATM settlement I couldn't help but notice that a lot of people were surprised by the amount that they got. Perhaps this will explain why they were higher amounts than you expected.

There were 63.5 million claims submitted for a share of the $197.5 million settlement. 99.5% of those claims were flagged for fraud and denied. That left only 296,877 approved claims to share that large amount so that is why you are seeing people with huge amounts. I haven't received my email yet so I better not be one of those that they flagged because I'm not sure what criteria they used but mine certainly wasn't fraud.
