Anyone have experience using genetic reports related to iodine/thyroid/DIO1 to guide iodine supplementation (ex: Self Decode, etc.)?
I’m working with a naturopath to find my ideal iodine daily intake, using nascent iodine (Detoxadine). I started off with one drop per day, but ended up taking 6 drops one morning after confusing my supplement bottles. After the initial panic, I actually felt more mentally cleared than I think I’ve ever felt in my life. Lasted the whole day along with positive mood and energy. i went back down to one drop per day then two after a few weeks. I initially felt more energy, more clearheaded, it started to have what seemed to be detox reactions every few weeks (scratchy throat, acne, extreme fatigue, brain fog, low mood). I’d read other folks report that increasing the dosage resulted in fewer detox symptoms and speculated whether this is due to iodine‘s antioxidant properties only taking affect at around 1mg (according to research). I also thought maybe there could be a genetic connection.
I did some digging into my Promethease report and found I may have a DIO1 gene variant. According to research, it seems this and other gene variants may cause some people to clear iodine more quickly and therefore be more susceptible to hypothyroidism. I’ve started to wonder if it’s gene variants that are actually causing people to have such a wide range of results with iodine. I started looking for genetic reports that might be able to provide more comprehensive insight. It looks like Self Decode has some, but if anyone has other suggestions/experiences with using genetic testing to guide iodine supplementation, I’d be interested.
