School or no school?

Hey everyone.

I recently got laid off from my 75k/yr supervisor job at a finance company. long story short: im sick of corporate and i pretty much will be taking a huge pay cut in order to just get a job that I dispise again.

Once I get this new job that pays like 23/hr, I want to do videography on the side and eventually do that full time. i am contemplating going back to school to get my degree in Digital Media or just buying some gear and going the freelancing route. I see job postings on linkedin and feel like I need to get a degree but I also hear about lots of people running their own business with no degree. I see posts about all these people making like 100k+ but I have no idea where to start. do i work for a company after I build a portfolio or do my own thing? i feel like i have so much to learn.

I have recently started editing small travel clips on my computer - i have a drone, Insta X5 and just my phone right now. I am waiting to get a new job until I buy a nice camera, lighting, etc..

If you did go your own route, how long did it take you to start actually making money? How many of you have your degree in videography related fields?

If anyone has thoughts/recommendations it would be appreciated.

Thanks.
