The Thunder won’t have the same roster next year. The question is who’s out and who’s interested?
Thunder have been excellent, in part because so many players have played together for so long as they evolved. But now there’s a logjam and new rookies coming in. Cap space is non existent. Something has to change.
As much as Thunder fans would like to ignore it, it’s an impending change like walking The Walking Dead coming up and not knowing who’s getting hit with a bat. For the rest of the league, it a chance to have some talent with untapped potential.
Who are they?
Lu Dort.
The only starter likely to move is Lu Dort. And as the rest of the league hates him, it’s likely that one new fan base is going to love him. After he signed with Klutch, it seems impossible that he doesn’t go somewhere new. Of course the Klutch -> Lakers connection is what everyone’s looking at. Definitely having Smart and Dort on the same team would frustrate teams left and right.
Bench players.. nobody but Presti knows. But it could be any combination of Aaron Wiggins, Kenrich Williams, and anybody else who’s privately asked to get to another team for more playing time.
The question is who’s is, rather who wouldn’t be, interested in adding some championship guys looking for a bigger role? Maybe Topic, maybe Isaiah Joe. Especially team friendly contracts like Joe, Wiggins, and Williams when high AAV contracts are more valuable than ever. One team could add immediate depth and defense overnight.
Question is who’s the best fit? And how much do you think it costs?
With the bench needing to develop guys like the next rookie, Sorber currently on the bench, and being unable to convert 2 way players that deserved it like Brandon Carlson, it probably won’t be for any players unless they’re on an amazing AAV contract themselves. More likely to be for future picks alone.
Lakers have the cap space to shore up that depth issue and add incredible defense overnight. Less guys you scream at, more hungry guys that have proven themselves in the clutch through multiple championship runs. Who else would make that short list?
