What is the next 10 years after breaking into animation?
So I constantly see posts asking about starting an animation career, I was hoping there are some senior animators here that could share some career advice for someone that’s been doing animation for years.
I am based in Malaysia and have been working in animation for almost 10 years now. Currently working as a lead animator for over 2 years in a Japanese game animation company that is also based in Malaysia.
Throughout my career I’ve had experience working on game cinematics, game animations, mocap, tv series, short films, motion graphics, etc. While I have enjoyed all the work I’ve done, and I am not complaining at all about my job or position, I keep having that itch that I want to work on my own projects. To create projects of my own instead of just completing deliverables.
I’ve had a passion for Game Design which got me into animation to begin with. I would also like be able to do cool indie animations or even interested to teach animation.
Due to personal financial commitments, I cannot let go of my current salary or take on a role with a lower salary than my current. However I also don’t think I can just continue on this path for another 10 years.
My question for those who are running their own studios or have been doing this way longer than me, what do you think I can do? Have you had similar feelings and what did you do about them?
