A friend of mine was caught stealing at a local Target and was given a citation and a notice of trespassing. He’s now worried about going to jail. His citation has officially been filed, and he was charged with a misdemeanor for theft—“transfer of movable property without consent.”

He feels ashamed of what he did, and it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. But after looking online and seeing that jail time is a possibility, he’s become very anxious. He’s also unsure when to expect a court notice, if he will go to jail, and whether he needs to hire a lawyer.
