Professor didn’t grade our assignments until the night before our final. Is it worth speaking to the dean?
This was for a Chemistry laboratory. Our final exam was based entirely on the contents of the practical experiments conducted in the second half of the semester. We were allowed to bring our lab notebooks, but not our lab manuals. Also, we were not allowed to add information to our lab notebooks that was not included in our lab reports— we were only allowed to correct mistakes according to the feedback we received from the professor. We were instructed to use the feedback to study for the exam. The issue is, we did not begin to receive feedback on our lab reports until the day before the exam. He graded my last report at midnight, then the exam occurred at 11a.
He did the same thing leading up to the midterm. By all other accounts he’s a decent teacher. However, I did not feel like I could gauge my progress in the class without having to attend office hours after every lab (which was impractical due to my class and work schedule). Additionally, I do not think that it’s fair for him to require us to submit all lab reports within 48 hours of the completion of the experiment if he is not grading the reports for 6-7 weeks. Would it be an overreaction to escalate the matter?
