Client’s check was cashed in by the IRS but they sent her a letter for the same amount owed a month later

Hi all

So, client paid the amount owed for an amended return. Check cleared on April 6th. IRS sent them a letter may 4th for the interest (which is ok) but also for the amount they already paid.

Should they pay the interest and include copy of cashed check with explanation

Or

Do I need to call the IrS on their behalf and explain / send proof for the amount paid and then have them send check for the interest only
