For those that own property in the U.S. but live abroad, how do you do it?

I’ve long read on here that the best solution for the whole maintaining residency/addresses/bank accounts issue is to just own property in the U.S. (I know many people recommend friends or family but that’s unfortunately not an option)

I believe this is something I can afford to do but I’m curious as to how it works if you’re never there. Some questions:

  • If you leave your property empty, are you concerned about a pipe bursting, or a heat wave causing an issue, or a natural disaster, or anything like that destroying your property while you’re gone?

  • How often do you return to your property to check on things?

  • Do you rent it out? Do you use a property management service?

  • If you do rent it out, is there any issue with using your address for e.g. bank accounts and stuff while your tenant obviously uses the same address?

  • Do you regret owning? Is it a pain in the ass to keep the property for any reason?

Really appreciate any insight here!

I’ve had my stuff in storage for a few years now and honestly all the trouble that comes from not having an actual residence is a huge annoyance. In addition, considering the cost I pay for storage I’m wondering if it’s just easier to rent a cheap apartment in a no income tax state and just move my stuff there and leave it empty.

Does anyone do this? I guess my concern is with things like a pipe bursting or a break-in or something of the sort. I’d go for an apartment or condo but still the same concerns are there when it’s empty for like 99% of the year. Are my concerns valid? Does anyone rent a place and just leave it empty?
