So I was recently talking about Martian Manhunter, Gerry Conway, and the Detroit era of the Justice League with some people and I mentioned this character and when I said her name they didn't really react very well.
I have never met any Roma people but I have seen some conflicting info about the word 'gypsy'. Some suggest it's a slur. Some claim the Roma people are not offended by it and actually prefer the term. Some suggest the word itself is not a slur but can be used in a derogatory way.
My questions are: Is "Gypsy" a slur? If so is it still ok to call this character that or should I call her something else? Also if it is then why hasn't DC changed it yet? Because I remember seeing her referred to as "Gypsy" as recently as the New History of the DC Universe book. Are there any Roma fans that can clarify this issue for me?
