Nearing 2 YOE, stuck in Google team matching for ~5 months. Should I still consider joining at L3 in India?
I’m looking for some realistic career advice from people who’ve been in big tech/Google India.
Background: ~2 YOE currently (SDE at another big tech, non FAANG), cleared Google L3 interviews and got the green light from recruiter for team matching in mid-Dec and since then I’ve just been in the team matching pipeline with no concrete development.
Now it’s May 2026, and during this time a few of my friends at google (who joined straight out of uni) have already been promoted to L4. So I’m honestly conflicted now. On one hand, Google still seems like a strong brand name, better engineering culture/WLB than many companies, long-term resume value probably still exists.
On the other hand, joining at L3 with nearly 2 YOE feels a bit weird now. The process delay makes me question hiring demand/team availability. Market compensation outside Google has improved a lot for good engineers I’m wondering if joining as L3 could slow down growth compared to staying elsewhere and pushing for faster promotions.
Assuming I eventually do get matched and receive an offer:
Would you still take Google L3 in India in 2026 at ~2 YOE?
How hard/slow is promotion from L3 to L4 these days?
Does the Google brand still materially help for future opportunities or would you prioritize compensation/title growth elsewhere instead?
Has anyone here joined Google “late” at L3 and still felt it was worth it?
Would especially appreciate perspectives from current/former googlers in India; People who chose other companies over Google recently or Folks who joined around the same time as me at L3.
Thanks!
TL;DR:
Cleared Google L3 interviews in late 2025 and have been stuck in team matching since Dec. I’m now nearing 2 YOE, while some peers have already been promoted to L4 in google. If I eventually get a Google India L3 offer, is it still worth joining in 2026 considering growth, compensation, and promotion timelines?
