Foreign Ministry rejects any ‘insidious insinuation’

Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, when consulted by Europa Press, have rejected ‘any insidious insinuation’ and highlighted the measures taken by the Spanish Government to combat anti-Semitism ‘without exception’.

‘The Spanish Government is committed to the fight against anti-Semitism and any form of hatred or discrimination, without exception. We therefore categorically reject any insidious accusation suggesting otherwise,’ the source explained.

In particular, they point out that this is ‘the first government in our country’s history to have formulated a national strategy to combat anti-Semitism’ and mention the approval in 2023 of the National Plan to Combat Anti-Semitism and Promote Jewish Life, ‘a milestone that systematises public policies in this area’.

‘Spain recognises and affirms the deep historical and human ties that bind it to the Jewish people,’ the source stated, recalling in this regard the granting of Spanish nationality to more than 72,000 Sephardic Jews and the ‘constant and fluid relationship’ with Jewish communities in Spain. He also cited the “significant” strengthening of security and protection measures in synagogues, educational centres, community spaces and diplomatic missions “with the aim of ensuring that no citizen is subjected to intimidation or violence on account of their religion or origin”.

‘This whole approach is underpinned by a fundamental and non-negotiable principle: the unequivocal condemnation of any form of hate speech, whether based on religious, ethnic, ideological or any other grounds,’ the source concludes.
