Illegal structures on lakeside torn down
The Pokhara Metropolitan City has started demolishing illegal structures along the lakeside of Phewa Lake on Saturday morning.
- This action follows an old Supreme Court order to protect the lake.
- Even parts of a well-known resort (Waterfront Resort) were torn down.
- The committee had also tested water samples used and discharged by the resort. laboratory tests found the water to be unfit for consumption.
- The demolition was done by the city with help from the police, after pressure from the Prime Minister.
What the court had ordered earlier:
- No buildings should be built within 65 meters of the lake.
- The lakeside should be declared a protected area.
- Any private land inside the lake area should be taken back and made part of the lake.
- Authorities must work together to protect the lake, its water, and wildlife, and stop pollution.
TLDR; The government is finally enforcing a long-standing court decision to protect Phewa Lake by removing illegal structures near it.
