I'm loving reading this sub, but haven't been able to find anything on this question--thanks in advance for your help y'all!

I've been a freelance education writer for years, but am pivoting over to technical writing. I'm trying to figure out which industry to target and what kind of samples to create for my portfolio. Here's the issue:

  1. I'm in Europe and not likely to move unless the pay is crazy good.
  2. For health reasons I can't just work US hours, so I'd have to work aysnc for a lot of the day.

My thoughts on writing types:

  • I like what I read about documentation for regulated industries, but lack experience. It seems likely to be less vulnerable to AI, but not remote/async-friendly.
  • My background seems to be a natural fit for writing tutorials/walkthroughs etc. for end users and articles for knowledge bases. But that seems likely to be more vulnerable to AI.

My thoughts on industries:

  • I figure SaaS is the main area to look at, as I understand it's the most remote-friendly type of tech writing.
  • Cybersecurity, supply chain logistics, and defense all sound super interesting to me personally, though I'd have to self-educate. But all seem like industries where the remote/async would be an obstacle.
  • EdTech seems natural but very small and even more competitive than average.

What do you all think? Are my assumptions on target? Am I missing something? (By the way, if you have any experience in one of these areas, please DM me, I'd love to talk directly! No hustle I swear, just looking to learn. )
