Laptop now crashing on 24.04, my theory is broken fan control, help?

My daily driver laptop is a Lenovo Thinkpad T14s Gen 3 AMD. That's a four-year-old model with an AMD mobile CPU (Ryzen 7 Pro 6850u). For most of its lifetime it's been just about perfect--fast and quiet. But it's started crashing on me this year. The machine will lock up or reset at random intervals. Yesterday it crashed twice, during only a couple hours of use; the first time I got the mauve screen of death, the second it hard reset and went to the POST screen.

I've observed two things about the crashes:

  • Heavy CPU activity makes the problem worse. Watching videos is a sure way to crash.
  • The laptop is very warm to the touch in the middle-top of the keyboard. I believe this is where the CPU sits.
  • I don't think I've heard the fan in quite a while. The fan isn't running when it crashes / resets.

I haven't changed the fan settings in the BIOS--I couldn't have, the BIOS doesn't have any fan settings. Truthfully I haven't changed BIOS settings in a long time; no point, there's almost nothing there.

Is it possible some recent upgrade changed or broke how the OS interacts with the fan, and now the fan has effectively been disabled? If so, any advice on how to get it spinning again? A quick Google suggested the "fancontrol" package; I tried that, and it tells me it can't find any configurable local PWM devices.

Thanks!

Is ZFS the reason my Pop!_OS release is no longer rolling?

I'm using Pop!_OS 24.04 on mah laptop here. I use ZFS for /home.

My kernel is still 6.17.9; when I upgrade (using "nala"), 6.18.7 is marked as "held back". I'm not a sophisticated enough Debian user to be able to determine exactly why this is, but my guess is: OpenZFS is stuck at 2.3.5 for some reason, and 6.17 is the newest revision of the linux kernel supported by OpenZFS 2.3.5, ergo, upgrade not allowed. If I got upgraded to OpenZFS to 2.3.6 or 2.4.1 (!), I could potentially upgrade to linux kernel 6.18 or even 6.19.

Any idea when this situation might change? Or have I misdiagnosed what's going on?
