Hi everyone, I need some advice because I’m feeling really confused about my relationship.
My boyfriend is originally from Malaysia, but he has been working in Singapore for a long time. Now he’s considering whether to convert to Singapore citizenship or not.
The issue is… me.
I’m not Singaporean (I’m Indonesian), so if he becomes a Singapore citizen, there are some complications for our future. For example, if we want to buy a resale HDB, there’s a waiting period (around 3 years), and he’s currently weighing all the pros and cons.
Another option is for him to remain Malaysian and live in JB, and commute to Singapore for work. But honestly, that lifestyle is really tiring — going back and forth every day.
From my point of view, I feel like there’s a simpler option:
He continues working in Singapore (for the stronger currency), I continue working in Indonesia, and in the future we could buy a house in Indonesia where the cost of living is much lower.
But he seems very conflicted and unsure, and it makes me wonder where I stand in his long-term plans. I understand this is a big life decision, but I can’t help feeling a bit insecure about it.
I would really like to ask if anyone has ever been in a similar situation, and how you handled it.
Thank you.
