Joining ALDI Nord as a Software Engineer & moving to Essen

Hey everyone 👋

I've just accepted a Software Engineer role at ALDI Nord and will be relocating to Essen soon. I'm not asking about interviews or how to get a job - I already have one! I just want to hear from current or former employees about what to expect before I start and before I move.

---

Work Culture & Environment

How would you describe the day-to-day atmosphere at ALDI Nord? Formal or relaxed? Is communication between teams open, or is it more hierarchical? For those in tech/software roles specifically - how modern is the stack and how agile are the teams really (not just on paper)?

Salary, Benefits & Perks

Are the benefits competitive compared to other German employers? Any bonuses, 13th salary, or performance pay? Health insurance, pension, or other extras worth knowing about?

Employee Discounts

This is a big one , do ALDI Nord employees actually get any store discounts? I've seen conflicting info online. Any other shopping or partner discounts through the company?

Work–Life Balance

Overtime culture - is it expected or avoidable? Flexible working and home office options for corporate/tech roles? How many vacation days do you get and is it actually easy to take them?

Living in Essen & NRW

Any neighborhood recommendations for someone new to the city? Budget-friendly but nice areas preferred. I'm also an immigrant and my German is conversational but not perfect — how welcoming is the workplace and Essen in general for internationals? Any tips from people who've been in the same boat would mean a lot. What's the commute like to the ALDI Nord HQ from different parts of the city?

Team & Career Growth

How is the engineering org structured — product teams, platform teams, etc.? Is there a clear path for growth or does it feel like a dead end after a while? How does ALDI Nord compare to other German corporate environments you've worked in?

---

I know this is a lot of questions, but I want to go in with realistic expectations rather than just what the job offer says 😄 Any honest answer even just one section would genuinely help.

Thanks so much in advance! 🙏
