My Experience As A Person Of Color.
Georgia as Person Of Color (Black).
All I heard before coming to Georgia (Tbilisi) is “Georgians are so welcoming”, “They’re the nicest people”.. Did I come to the wrong Georgia?
I’m a black American. Well spoken, well dressed, and well off financially. Since the moment I’ve gotten here I’ve been met with nothing but scowls and hostility. Every time I leave the house people look at me like Im some sort of freak/abomination. As if there’s something written on my forehead that I’m not aware of. As if I’m not allowed to exist in public or burdening everyone with my presence.
Why is this not spoken of more often? Or outright denied as a reality? I’ve seen several people ask or say similar things and Georgians or Russians comment that it’s not the truth.. Possibly because they exist in a reality where they don’t have to experience it (just a theory).
Tell me I’m wrong. That they’re like this with everyone. That it’s not race but something else. Because every white expat I’ve met has a completely opposite experience than myself or the people of color I’ve spoken to since arriving.
I came with the highest hopes and did not want this to be the truth..
I’m self assured enough to do my own thing and make the best of my time here (as much as possible) but it has been a huge disappointment. It’s surprising because this is a country that talks about “a desire to join the EU” but is so behind in social development. They want Kanye to come here but don’t like black people?? 😂😂
I’d love to hear some personal opinions on this
EDIT: it would appear the Georgian Reddit shadow army is present and handing out downvotes.. THIS is exactly why these messages struggle to get out.
