I'm asking this because my assumption was always that it's due to the fact that the prophet's dignity has to be protected as it would be weird to know his widows intimately. But then I wonder how fair is that to those women. Because some of them spent more than 20 years alone. Aisha died in after 60, meaning she lived for 40 years as a widow. She was just in her prime when Muhammad died.
