The Idiocy That Results From Adding "Jehovah" To The NT
Here's how Romans 14:6-9 is rendered in the NWT:
>"6 The one who observes the day observes it to Jehovah. Also, the one who eats, eats to Jehovah, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat does not eat to Jehovah, and yet gives thanks to God. 7 Not one of us, in fact, lives with regard to himself only, and no one dies with regard to himself only. 8 For if we live, we live to Jehovah, and if we die, we die to Jehovah. So both if we live and if we die, we belong to Jehovah. 9 For to this end Christ died and came to life again, so that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living."
Notice what verse 9 is saying. It's actually giving a reason or justification for verse 8 - and in doing so, it spells out the identity of the "Kyrios" being mentioned in the preceding verses - Jesus! But this connection is lost because of Watchtowers botched emendation of the text by replacing "Kyrios" with "Jehovah".
Verses 8 to 9 should really read:
>"8 For if we live, we live to Jehovah the Lord, and if we die, we die to Jehovah the Lord. So both if we live and if we die, we belong to Jehovah the Lord. 9 For to this end Christ died and came to life again, so that he might be Lord over both the dead and the living."
See how it now makes more sense logically?
Now look at verse 6:
>"... the one who eats, eats to Jehovah, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat does not eat to Jehovah, and yet gives thanks to God"
Is it just me, or does this wording seem a bit weird? Does it make sense for the writer to be speaking about God in this way by switching between the use of the name "Jehovah" and the title "God" as if he's speaking about 2 different people? Why not just use "God" alone, or "Jehovah" alone; or one of them with the pronoun "him"? Why the switching between "Jehovah" and "God"?
It seems that way because the writer is speaking about, and distinguishing, 2 different people. The writer is speaking about both God and Jesus. He's using "kyrios" (Lord) to refer to Jesus, and "God" to refer to the Father.
Verse 6 should read:
>"... the one who eats, eats to Jehovah the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and the one who does not eat does not eat to Jehovah the Lord, and yet gives thanks to God"
Romans 14:6-9 is a perfect example of why Watchtower's action of replacing "Lord" with "Jehovah" in the NT, was a huge mistake.
